The encounter lasted for just 59 minutes and 13 games, 12 of which were won by world number five Sharapova.

The Russian won the title in London back in 2004 as a teenager, but since then has failed to get her hands on the crown for a second time. The closest she came was three years ago when she was defeated by Petra Kvitova in the final.

As for 26-year-old Murray, she had been appearing at Wimbledon for the second time in her career.
