Jermain Defoe secures Sunderland a point against Swansea City

Jermain Defoe cancels out Bafetimbi Gomis's strike as Sunderland draw at home to Swansea City.

Sunderland came from a goal down to earn a point at home to Swansea City this afternoon.

Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis had efforts saved from outside the box but Sunderland remained defensively rigid early on, which will have pleased manager Dick Advocaat after their first two games of the season, in which they conceded seven times.

Ayew went close to scoring just after the half-hour mark with a shot that went just past the post from the edge of the box, before Sunderland's Danny Graham had an overhead kick saved by Lukas Fabianski.

Swansea took the lead in injury time though, as Kyle Naughton played Gomis through on goal and he comfortably slotted it into the back of the net.

Sunderland struggled to live with Swansea's pace after the break as they forced several set-pieces, and Ayew hit the post with a header from a corner.

Jeremain Lens had an equaliser ruled out for offside for the hosts before Jack Rodwell, who was recalled to the side in place of Sebastian Larsson, shot just over the bar from 25 yards.

Their pressure paid off minutes later as Lens set up Jermain Defoe, and he clinically passed the ball into the bottom corner.

Swansea almost hit back quickly though, as Gylfi Sigurdsson was afforded too much space on the edge of the box and his shot was saved low down by Costel Pantillimon.

The South Wales side continued to pepper the Sunderland goal, as Jefferson Montero's cross was met by Gomis, whose header was tipped away by Pantillimon.

Sunderland almost stole the points in added time though, as Coates headed wide from close range after Lens whipped in a corner.
