Jonjo Shelvey: 'England should play like Swansea City'

Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey believes that the England team may have more success on the international stage if they play like Michael Laudrup's side.

Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey believes that the England team should start playing more like Michael Laudrup's side.

The 21-year-old echoed the views of Jamie Carragher, who saud that Roy Hodgson's team should adapt to play a different style of football to compete with the likes of Spain in major competitions.

Shelvey told The Mirror: "For Jamie, who was an outstanding footballer, to say that speak volumes about this club.

"I agree with him because the way England play is very traditional. Look at Spain and Italy – we got battered by the Italians in the Under-21s and could not get the ball off them – but we had the players to do that to them.

"It's frustrating because you get told to sit off and defend when we should be attacking them. We need to show more bravery when we play for our countries to get on the ball and pass it. That's something which is encouraged at Swansea."

Swansea face Liverpool in the Premier League later today.
