Southampton return to winning ways

Unanswered goals from Shane Long and Dusan Tadic against Watford end Southampton's three-game losing streak.

Southampton ended a three-game losing run in all competitions thanks to a 2-0 win over Watford at the St Mary's Stadium this evening.

Goals in either half from Shane Long and Dusan Tadic did the damage, lifting Ronald Koeman's men up to 12th in the Premier League in the process.

It took Irish striker Long just 17 minutes to score what was his eighth goal of the campaign for the Saints. Young left-back Matt Targett was the creator, swinging over a near-post cross which the 28-year-old was able to head beyond Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Reported Manchester United transfer target Sadio Mane then had two chances to score a second goal for the hosts before the break, but the Senegal international was unable to get the better of Gomes with either of them.

Saints midfielder Steven Davis had a goal ruled out for offside after the restart and it was not until the 73rd minute that the points were made safe.

Serbian winger Tadic had only replaced Mane a couple of minutes earlier, yet he was sharp enough to scamper away from Ikechi Anya. His shot was straight at Gomes, who was unable to prevent the ball from squirming underneath his body and over the line.
