Ameobi: 'I need to play more games'

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi insists that he needs to start more games for the club as he bids to make Nigeria's World Cup squad.

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has hinted that he could leave the club if he doesn't feature regularly in the side's starting lineup.

The Magpies signed Loic Remy earlier this week, while they have been linked with a move for Bafetimbi Gomis, and Ameobi has admitted that he will 'see what's out there' should he fall down the pecking order at the club.

The 31-year-old told Sky Sports News: "This year is a big year for me. I am in the final year of my contract and I have got the World Cup at the end of the year as well, so it is important that I put myself physically in the best shape I can.

"For Newcastle, I always give 100% like I always have and if I am here, that is what will happen.

"If they bring in strikers I might have to see what else is out there because I need to be playing football - that is really important for me this year."

Ameobi has scored 76 goals in 368 appearances for Newcastle.
