Two late goals have given Montpellier a 2-0 triumph over Rennes in Ligue 1.

In a quiet first half, it was Rennes who had the better chances but Mevlut Erding twice missed the target after finding himself in space inside the Montpellier penalty area.

The hosts improved in the second period and could have taken the lead when John Utaka evaded a couple of visiting defenders but he drilled his effort wide.

Rennes looked the most likely to open the scoring but were punished in the 75th minute when Vitorino Hilton fired home to give his side a crucial lead.

Souleymane Camara confirmed victory for Montpellier with a smart finish five minutes from the end.
