England captain Wayne Rooney: 'I should not have played in 2006 World Cup'

England captain Wayne Rooney admits that he should have sat out of the 2006 World Cup due to his injury woes.

England captain Wayne Rooney has admitted that he was wrong to have played in the 2006 World Cup due to his injury problems.

The Manchester United striker travelled with the Three Lions to Berlin, despite having recently broken a metatarsal in his foot.

It was a disappointing campaign for the player as he was sent off in England's quarter-final defeat to Portugal.

In a new BBC documentary Wayne Rooney: The Man Behind The Goals, the 29-year-old said: "If I could go back, I would probably have sat out the World Cup in Germany. I never really had that match sharpness. It was a big ask to get fit after six weeks out not playing."

The documentary, which features Match of the Day anchor Gary Lineker, will be aired next Monday.
