Juan Mata 'took pay cut to stay at Manchester United'

Midfielder Juan Mata allegedly accepted a pay cut in order to sign a new contract with Manchester United.

Juan Mata has reportedly taken a pay cut in order to extend his stay at Manchester United.

The midfielder's contract was due to expire this summer, leading to interest from a number of clubs back in Spain who were keen to take advantage of the situation.

However, the 31-year-old surprised many earlier this week by penning a new deal at Old Trafford, extending his stay until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

According to The Sun, fresh terms were only agreed because Mata accepted a pay cut, believed to be in the region of £45,000 per week.

The report suggests that a compromise was reached between the two parties, with Mata not being keen on just a 12-month extension.

Mata made 28 appearances in the Premier League and Champions League this season, contributing four goals and two assists.
