Manchester United could be set to appoint the former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, according to a report.

Manchester United could reportedly be set to appoint the former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards.

The Red Devils are currently without a sporting director and have identified Edwards as their top target.

According to Football Insider, United are close to agreeing a deal with the 43-year-old and are willing to wait until next summer for him to join.

Man United have spent over £1bn on transfers since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013 but have won just three major trophies in that time, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool overtaking them as English football's most dominant clubs during that period.

Despite the fact that Chelsea are also searching for a sporting director, and were rumoured to be in the running, it is said that they have moved on to other targets.

Currently, Edwards is on sabbatical having left the Merseyside club after 11 years and is said to be keen on a new challenge.

Edwards rose to prominence during his time at Liverpool where he masterminded their transfer business, which helped the club to win their first Premier League title among other multiple other successes.

Over the last six years, Edwards has helped to transform Liverpool's squad, recruiting top talents such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk.

Edwards also oversaw the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona which secured huge profits from a £142m fee.
