Preview: Lincoln City vs. Burton Albion - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Lincoln City and Burton Albion, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Lincoln City will look to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches when they welcome Burton Albion to the LNER Stadium for Tuesday's League One contest.

The Brewers, meanwhile, will be hoping to pick up a point that would secure their place in League One for another season.

Match preview

Lincoln are well set to secure a top-half finish after winning four and drawing one of their previous five matches.

In their most recent outing, the Imps claimed a 2-0 away victory over Wycombe Wanderers thanks to goals from Dylan Duffy and Lasse Sorensen.

Lincoln would have been pleased with another strong defensive display, keeping their fourth clean sheet in five matches.

With three games left to play, Mark Kennedy's side are sitting in a respectable 10th position, and the Lincoln boss will be looking for his side to carry their unbeaten run into the summer break.

After losing just one of their 21 home league matches this season, Tuesday's hosts will be confident that they can pick up at least a point against Burton.

Since recording an impressive 3-2 win over promotion-chasing Sheffield Wednesday, Burton have picked up just one point from games against playoff hopefuls Bolton Wanderers and Derby County.

Dino Maamria's side were able to hold Bolton to a 1-1 draw, but they were edged out by Derby at the weekend, losing 1-0 following David McGoldrick's second-half penalty.

The Brewers, who occupy 18th position, know that they only need a point from their final four games to secure their League One status.

Burton have struggled defensively during the 2022-23 campaign, conceding 78 goals in 42 matches - only basement side Forest Green Rovers have let in more.

They may be hopeful of producing a strong defensive performance on Tuesday after keeping a clean sheet in their reverse fixture with Lincoln, where they claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Team News

The hosts are expected to be without the services of Teddy Bishop, who has missed the last four matches through injury.

Carl Rushworth returned to the Lincoln goal on Saturday following a one-match suspension, and after keeping Wycombe at bay, he will be looking to claim consecutive clean sheets on Tuesday.

Sean Roughan came into the backline at the weekend, and he is set to retain his place with Kennedy expected to name an unchanged lineup.

As for the visitors, Conor Shaughnessy came into the side for Saturday's defeat to Derby, and he will continue to operate in a back three alongside Sam Hughes and Jasper Moon.

After dropping down to the bench on Saturday, Johnny Smith could be brought back into the side to replace Mustapha Carayol.

Dale Taylor will continue to lead the line, and the Nottingham Forest loanee will be looking to add to the five league goals that he has scored in a Burton shirt.

Lincoln City possible starting lineup:
Rushworth; Poole, O'Connor, Roughan; Sorensen, Virtue-Thick, Erhahon, Boyes; Shodipo, Duffy, Plange

Burton Albion possible starting lineup:
MacGillivray; Shaughnessy, Hughes, Moon; Brayford, Oshilaja, Powell, Ashworth; Helm, Smith, Taylor

We say: Lincoln City 1-1 Burton Albion

Burton cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture, but beating Lincoln at the LNER Stadium will prove to be a much tougher challenge.

The Imps have lost just one home league game this season, and we think that they will avoid defeat once again by holding Burton to a draw.
