Everton boss Roberto Martinez backs Ross Barkley to rediscover best form

Everton boss Roberto Martinez believes that Ross Barkley can return to his peak form this season after struggling to impose himself in the last campaign.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has backed Ross Barkley to return to his best form this season.

The 21-year-old made an impact for the Toffees in the 2013-14 campaign with several impressive displays to earn a place in the England squad for the World Cup.

Barkley struggled to produce his best for Martinez's men last term amid speculation over his future, but the Everton boss is confident that the midfielder can shine once again in the heart of midfield.

Martinez told reporters: "He is ready to kick on this season. I really, really enjoy when he has that real freedom as a number eight, and can get box to box in those positions.

"At times as a number ten he feels a little bit more claustrophobic. You can give him a bit more freedom in a midfield role or a different type of role. Ross might not be getting attention from others, but he is getting it internally. Everyone knows what a special footballer he is, he doesn't need the outside to tell him.

"He has changed immensely in the way he makes decisions on the pitch. A player of his quality and physicality, if we get that decision making right, he is going to be at his very best."

Everton open their season against Watford at Goodison Park later today.
