Preview: Blackburn Rovers vs. Peterborough United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Championship clash between Blackburn Rovers and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Blackburn Rovers play host to Peterborough United on Wednesday evening looking for the victory which will keep them in close proximity to the Championship playoffs.

Meanwhile, Peterborough make the trip to Ewood Park sitting in the relegation zone after putting together a run of four games without a win.

Having witnessed his Blackburn side capitulate against Fulham earlier this month, Tony Mowbray would have recognised that the embarrassment of such a defeat had the potential to linger.

However, Rovers have collected four points from games against Sheffield United and Bristol City, results which have kept the club in the mix for the top six.

Keeping just one clean sheet in 10 matches will continue to concern Mowbray, but progressing onto 27 points from 18 matches is more than respectable at this stage of the campaign.

Blackburn also came from behind in each of their latest double-header, the ideal show of character after the Fulham debacle, while Ben Brereton Diaz added two more goals to his total for the season.

The Chile international remains the difference maker in this team, the versatile forward having netted 14 of Blackburn's 29 goals for the season.

At a time when Blackburn possess the fourth-best attacking record in the division, Peterborough have the worst defensive return having shipped 34 times.

To their credit, just four goals have been conceded in three matches, their latest result being a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Stoke City.

Nevertheless, making improvements at the back has contributed to just one goal being scored at the other end in four games, that effort coming when Posh were trailing at home to Huddersfield Town.

All things considered, Darren Ferguson will be content with sitting just three points behind 19th-placed Cardiff City, but his team need to take advantage of the more favourable schedule which awaits them.

Team News

Mowbray is expected to make at least a couple of changes to his Blackburn XI, with Tyrhys Dolan an option on the flank ahead of the injured Ian Poveda-Ocampo.

One of Leighton Clarkson and Joe Rothwell should be given an opportunity in midfield as a replacement for Jacob Davenport.

Daniel Ayala came through 46 minutes at the weekend, but Mowbray may not want to risk the centre-back again after only a couple of days training.

Ferguson will consider making alterations to his Peterborough side, including handing a recall to Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Josh Knight could also come back into the team, with Mark Beevers and Sammie Szmodics the players to miss out.

Blackburn Rovers possible starting lineup:
Kaminski; Nyambe, Lenihan, Wharton, Edun; Travis, Buckley, Rothwell; Dolan, Brereton, Khadra

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Cornell; Knight, Kent, Thompson; Ward, Taylor, Norburn, Butler; Grant; Dembele, Clarke-Harris

We say: Blackburn Rovers 3-1 Peterborough United

Having lost all momentum, a trip to a team with a strong home record is less than ideal for Peterborough. Blackburn have not always been perfect this season, but we still expect Mowbray's men to make light work of Posh.
