Alexander Ward through, Marcus Willis misses out on Wimbledon

British number 19 Alexander Ward wins his final qualifying match to progress through to the main draw at Wimbledon, but Marcus Willis misses out.

British number 19 Alexander Ward has progressed through to the main draw at Wimbledon after beating Teymuraz Gabashvili in his final qualifying match.

The world number 855 dropped the opening set against the Russian before storming back to claim a 6-7 6-4 7-6 6-1 triumph at Roehampton.

It represents a remarkable change of fortunes for the 27-year-old, who had lost his previous six matches before reeling off three wins in a row to secure his second successive appearance at SW19.

However, there was disappointment for Marcus Willis, who suffered a 6-4 6-1 7-6 defeat to Illya Marchenko as he failed to repeat his heroics of 12 months ago when he won seven matches to reach the second round.

Teenage wildcard Jay Clarke also missed out after squandering a two-set advantage to lose 6-2 7-6 4-6 4-6 1-6 to Sebastian Ofner.
