Gilles Simon progresses due to Paul-Henri Mathieu injury

Simon through, Mathieu retires

Gilles Simon has progressed into the second round of the Wimbledon Championships after Paul-Henri Mathieu was forced to retire with injury.

The Frenchman consulted his medical staff on the grass court in the early stages of the clash due to a groin strain.

While Mathieu did continue, the 30-year-old's game continued to be hampered by the problem, which forced him to retire from the contest completely.

Simon nabbed the first set 6-3 and looked on course to take the second following an impressive display until the game was abandoned on 5-4.
