British hopeful James Ward loses a five-set epic to American 10th seed Mardy Fish in the second round at Wimbledon.

British hopeful James Ward is out of this year's Wimbledon championships following a 6-3 5-7 6-4 6-7 (7/3) 6-3 defeat to 10th seed Mardy Fish in the second round.

Both players had one break point each in the opening set and Fish converted his to edge ahead.

The American had nine chances to break his opponent in the following set, however he only converted one and was punished as Ward broke through twice to level the match.

Set three was almost a carbon copy of the first, with Fish retaking the lead in efficient fashion, but Ward battled back again to force a decider following an ultra-agressive masterclass in the fourth-set tie-breaker.

Ward looked fatigued after his energy-sapping heroics and Fish seized his chances to secure the dramatic win in just over four hours.

David Goffin awaits Fish in round three.
