Serena Williams approves Wimbledon's "unique" rule of only wearing white

Five-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has claimed that the All England Club's rule of only wearing white "works well".

It has always been tradition for competitors to wear all white during the Grand Slam, and Williams has insisted that she would never change the tournament's "unique" requirement.

"That's another thing that I think makes Wimbledon really unique - they have a rule about your attire," Williams told reporters. "The [US] Open - you can imagine them in New York them saying, 'you can't wear this'. It would be kind of weird.

"It works well here. It's part of tradition. As a club member, when you come here to play, you have to wear white. They want everyone else to. I think it's unique. I think it's beautiful to see white against the grass. I think it makes for great photos."

The American, who is half way to winning all four Grand Slams in a single year, reached the second round of the tournament this afternoon with a 6-4 6-1 triumph over Margarita Gasparyan.
