Day two's play abandoned on outside courts at Wimbledon due to rain

Day two's play on the outside courts at Wimbledon is abandoned due to rain.

Wimbledon organisers have announced that play has been abandoned on the outside courts at SW19 due to rain.

Defending champion Serena Williams and world number two Andy Murray managed to come through their first-round matches unscathed before the heavens opened.

Numerous matches were interrupted and the covers came on in all the outer courts, meaning that day three's schedule will be congested.

Tomas Berdych had a 2-1 set lead in his opener against Ivan Dodig when the match was suspended, while the clash between Fernando Verdasco and Bernard Tomic was halted just before the fifth set with the players on two sets apiece.

Dominic Thiem and Florian Mayer managed to play just three games before the rain descended, and Brit Johanna Konta was leading Monica Puig by one set in her first-round match.

World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic is due to play his second-round match tomorrow, while Roger Federer is scheduled to take on British qualifier and 706th-ranked player Marcus Willis on the same day.

The first-round contest between Coco Vandeweghe and Kateryna Bondarenko will be played on Centre Court this evening following Caroline Wozniacki's exit to Svetlana Kuznetsova.
