Kei Nishikori withdraws from Wimbledon

World number five Kei Nishikori pulls out of Wimbledon with a calf injury sustained in his first-round match.

World number five Kei Nishikori has announced that he will not be able to continue at this year's Wimbledon after sustaining a calf injury in his first-round match.

The Japanese player had been due to face Santiago Giraldo on Centre Court this afternoon, but he has been unable to recover from the injury to his left leg.

Nishikori had his best ever run at Wimbledon in 2014, reaching the fourth round of the grass court Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

The withdrawal of the fifth seed means that US Open champion Marin Cilic will now face Ricardas Berankis on Centre Court, while Fernando Verdasco and Dominic Thiem move to Court Three.
