Serena Williams comfortably through to quarter-finals of US Open

Williams safely through to final eight

World number one Serena Williams has earned a spot in the quarter-finals of the US Open with a straight-sets win over Yaroslava Shvedova at Flushing Meadows in New York.

The American, who is searching for a seventh crown at her home Grand Slam, secured a 6-2 6-3 triumph on the hard court in one hour and 10 minutes.

Williams showed her intent early on by converting a fifth break point on her opponent's opening service game, and she held on to the momentum.

Shvedova, who is ranked 52nd in the world, seemed out of her depth in the match as she failed to create a single break point.

The 28-year-old held her own on serve in the early stages of the second set, but Williams needed just the one break to progress into the next phase of the Slam.

Williams, whose sister Venus was knocked out by Karolina Pliskova earlier today, will face Simona Halep in the quarter-finals.

The 34-year-old tennis star now has 308 career Grand Slam singles wins to her name - more than any other man or woman in history.
