Dominic Thiem dumps Feliciano Lopez out of US Open

Dominic Thiem books his place in the last 16 of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over number 19 seed Feliciano Lopez.

Number 19 seed Feliciano Lopez has crashed out of the US Open in the third round at the hands of Dominic Thiem.

The Austrian began the match in a confident fashion and managed to break the 32-year-old twice in the first set to claim a 6-4 victory after holding serve to secure the win.

Thiem grew in confidence in the second as he dominated the Spaniard and took his opportunities with deadly-accurate groundstrokes to take the set 6-2.

The 20-year-old earned his spot in the fourth round as Lopez committed several unforced errors in the third, and the Austrian managed to limit his mistakes to secure the set 6-3.

Thiem will now face number six seed Tomas Berdych in the last 16 of the tournament.
