Venus Williams passes Belinda Bencic test to reach fourth round of US Open

Venus Williams passes Bencic test in NYC

Experience has triumphed over youth as Venus Williams has secured a 6-3 6-4 victory over Belinda Bencic to reach the fourth round of the US Open.

Williams started aggressively as she pushed the teenager to break point three times, but Bencic was able to hold serve eventually.

The next time, the 18-year-old, who defeated Venus's sister Serena in the Rogers Cup semi-finals last month, was not as composed as Williams went a break up without conceding in the eighth game.

After successfully serving for a one-set lead, Williams, who has won this Grand Slam twice before, pulled up three break points instantly, but she was unable to convert.

The 35-year-old American paid the price for those missed chances as she went a break down in the fourth game, giving Bencic a lift in a difficult game for the Swiss.

Bencic looked to have turned things around when she moved to a 3-1 lead, but Williams staged an impressive comeback to get the match back on serve.

A crucial moment in the match came when Williams broke again, putting her just one game away from winning, which she was able to do on serve.
