Result: Serena Williams in easy first round win

Serena Williams sailed through the first round at Flushing Meadows last night, defeating her opponent Bojana Jovanovski in under an hour.

The 29-year-old, who is the favourite to win the tournament despite being seeded 29th, beat the 19-year-old Serbian 6-1 6-1.

Earlier in the day, number one seed Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the second round after a 6-3 6-1 triumph over Nuria Llagostera Vives.

Williams will next face Michaella Krajicek, while Wozniacki is set for an encounter with Holland's Arantxa Rus.
