Result: Juan Carlos Ferrero defeats Gael Monfils in five-set epic

Juan Carlos Ferrero pulled off a shock win against number seven seed Gael Monfils to progress to the US Open third round.

The Spaniard, who is ranked 105 in the world, took the opening set 7-5 on a tie-break, before Monfils found his form to win the second 5-7.

The Frenchman then took the lead by claiming the third 5-7 on another tie-break.

Ferrero, a former world number one, rolled back the years to square the match by taking the fourth set 6-4.

The former French Open champion then triumphed in the decisive set 6-4 to win after nearly five hours on court.
