Novak Djokovic beats Jerzy Janowicz in four sets to reach US Open second round

Djokovic beats Janowicz in four sets

Defending US Open champion Novak Djokovic has got his campaign off to a winning start by beating Jerzy Janowicz in four sets at Flushing Meadows in New York.

The world number one came through a 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1 triumph to reach the second round of the Grand Slam, which he has won twice.

Djokovic headed into the tournament on the back of a disappointing run having suffered an early exit at Wimbledon and a first-round loss at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but he was in better form on Monday as he required one break of serve to take the opening set.

The Serbian suffered a wobble in the second set as he lost serve twice, despite breaking back initially, and Janowicz drew level on the scoreboard.

Djokovic bounced back immediately, though, as he snatched a break at the first time of asking before wrapping up the third set in 33 minutes.

The 12-time Grand Slam champion moved into cruise control in the fourth as he broke Janowicz three times to book his place in the next round.
