Result: Elena Baltacha benefits from Jamie Hampton injury

Great Britain's number one Elena Baltacha has progressed through to the second round of the US Open after her opponent Jamie Hampton was forced to retire with a leg injury.

Both players had claimed a set each 6-2, but during the decider Hampton pulled up with a muscle complaint and was unable to continue.

Baltacha, 28, was leading at the time 5-1.

She will now face either Svetlana Kuznetsova or Sara Errani on Thursday.
