The fourth seeds last lifted a major title eight months ago at the Australian Open, with this latest success for Murray the first for a British man in 44 years at Flushing Meadows.

Buoyed by their win over the defending champions in the last round, Murray and Soares dominated the final as they recovered from a loss of serve in the opening game to break their opponents three times and ease ahead.

Seven straight games put the pair in command in that opener, but there was to be a moment of worry for Murray as he appeared to injure his neck which required medical attention.

The second set also passed by relatively stress free, however, as they held throughout and broke their opponents in the second game - thanks to an interception volley at the net by Murray - to get over the line in New York with another impressive triumph.
