Andy Murray eases past Matthias Bachinger to reach US Open third round

Andy Murray continues his bid for a second US Open title by beating Matthias Bachinger 6-3 6-3 6-4 in the second round.

Andy Murray has booked his place in the third round of the US Open with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory over Matthias Bachinger.

It was a battle of contrasting styles from the first serve in New York, with Murray testing Bachinger's quality at the net by unleashing some trademark strokes from the back of the court.

Bachinger stayed with the eighth seed for the majority of the first set before gifting him a 5-3 lead, and Murray capitalised by securing the opener with an ace.

The Scot was immediately on the front foot at the start of the second set, breaking his German opponent in the first game to claim a bigger advantage.

Bachinger had no response to the setback, despite enjoying some spectacular rallies, and the 2-0 lead was Murray's thanks to another break of serve.

The world number 235 battle admirably in the third set, forcing Murray to save three break points during a testing service game, but an upset never looked likely.

Murray finished the match by breaking to love, ensuring that the 2012 champion's hopes of winning a third Grand Slam remain alive.
