Edmund, Watson fall at first hurdle

Britain's highest-ranked male player Kyle Edmund has been knocked out of the US Open by Paolo Lorenzi in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

The 23-year-old struggled with cramp and had to take medication to get him through the match, which ended in a 6-4 4-6 7-5 6-1 defeat on Monday evening.

Lorenzi, ranked 94th in the world, took advantage of Edmund's inability to freely move around the court, with the Englishman making 55 unforced errors.

Edmund has now won just three of his last eight matches since reaching the third round at Wimbledon in July.

Fellow Briton Heather Watson also fell at the first hurdle, meanwhile, losing 6-1 3-6 6-3 to Ekaterina Makarova in New York.

Watson converted just two of her seven break-point opportunities and lost to a single break in the decider.
