Cuevas retires in US Open

Pablo Cuevas has retired in his US Open match against Janko Tipsarevic with the score at 3-6 7-6 3-6.

The first set was fairly even but Tipsarevic took the advantage, breaking Cuevas's serve to go 4-2 ahead. Tipsarevic then held his next game, as did Cuevas.

However, after a body serve and a short rally, Tipsarevic took the first set 6-3.

The second set started with both players holding their serve to bring up 2-2. A strong body serve from Tipsarevic then produced another short rally that the Serb won to make it 3-3.

Cuevas continued the pattern of play and the set went to a tie-break.

The Uruguayan raced into a 6-0 lead, but Tipsarevic held on and pushed his way back into contention at 5-6.

However, Cuevas got the point he needed to level the match at one set all.

Tipsarevic was the first to sneak ahead in the third, breaking Cuevas to edge into a 5-3 advantage. The Serb held his service game, winning 6-3 to go two sets to one up.

However, shortly after the start of fourth set, Cuevas was forced to retire, handing Tipsarevic the win.
