Sara Errani has opened up about knocking close friend Roberta Vinci out of the US Open at the quarter-final stage.

The Italian admitted that playing against her compatriot was "strange" but expressed her delight at reaching the semi-finals.

"It's always hard to play against a friend and it was strange seeing her on the other side of the net," said Errani.

"I am happy to get to the semi-final. Can I win the title? I will tell you in three or four days."

Errani booked her place in the last four with a 6-2 6-4 win, and will face either Serena Williams or Ana Ivanovic.
