Johanna Konta comfortably through to second round of Australian Open

Konta eases through first round

Britain's main hope of glory at the Australian Open, Johanna Konta, has secured a place in the second round of the Grand Slam with a straight-sets victory over Madison Brengle in Melbourne.

The 26-year-old, who is ranked number 10 in the world, has a positive history at the tournament having reached the semi-finals and the quarter-finals in the past two years.

Taking on the last player to beat Serena Williams was no easy prospect, but Konta managed to seal a 6-3 6-1 victory in just under one hour and 10 minutes.

The Brit started the contest on the front foot by breaking twice to take a 5-2 lead, but there was a moment of concern when Brengle denied her opponent set point.

Konta responded, though, by breaking back immediately and putting herself ahead on the board before nabbing a crucial double break in the second set.

The Brit secured progression into the next phase of the tournament on her fourth match point.
