The defending champion was never troubled by the world number 49 as he secured a 6-3 6-3 7-5 triumph on the Rod Laver Arena.

Istomin won just three points on the Djokovic serve during a one-sided first set, and a solitary break point was enough for the world number two to take the second.

Djokovic lost his serve for the first time in the match when serving to progress to the last 16, but he recovered immediately to move through to an encounter with Fabio Fognini.
