Baghdatis impresses in win over Goffin

Twentieth seed David Goffin has been eliminated from the Australian Open after suffering a second-round defeat to Marcos Baghdatis.

The 2006 finalist had far too much firepower for Goffin, who succumbed by a 6-1 6-4 4-6 6-0 scoreline to the Cypriot.

Goffin was favourite to prevail on Court 6 but Baghdatis, a former world number eight, was far from a rank outsider and he stunned the Belgian during a one-sided opening set that lasted just 20 minutes.

The Belgian, who has improved to 22nd in the ATP world rankings, made a better start to the second but towards the end of the set, Baghdatis finally took one of his five break-point chances to move one away from the third round.

Baghdatis broke in the fifth game of the third to leave himself on the brink of the win, but Goffin wasn't finished and the 20th seed reeled off three breaks of his own to take the match into a fourth set.

The momentum was with Goffin but Baghdatis rallied to secure two successive breaks before completing a whitewash set to seal his passage through to the last 32.
