Andy Murray handed Alexander Zverev test at Australian Open

World number two Andy Murray will play Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open first round.

World number two Andy Murray has been handed a first-round clash with Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open.

Murray, a four-time runner-up in Melbourne, beat the young German, who is regarded as one of the top talents in the sport, in the Hopman Cup earlier this month.

Kyle Edmund will face world number 81 Damir Dzumhur, while British number two Aljaz Bedene will play American Steve Johnson.

Defending champion and world number one Novak Djokovic will open against Hyeon Chung, with Roger Federer getting his campaign underway against Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The two icons of the game have been drawn in the opposite quarter to Murray, but the Scot faces the prospect of having to defeat either Stanislas Wawrinka or Rafael Nadal if he is to make the final for the fifth time.

However, he will be focused on coming through the first week, and if he progresses past Zverev, a tricky encounter with either big-serving Sam Groth or unorthodox Adrian Mannarino, who almost beat Murray at the US Open, awaits in the last 64.

The two-time Major champion is seeded to play Joao Sousa in the third round, while John Isner or Bernard Tomic could be his opponent in the last 16, should he reach the second week.
