The Swiss world number two will now meet world number one Novak Djokovic in Monday's showpiece event following the Serbian's victory over Juan Martin del Potro earlier in the day.

Murray got off to a positive start as he broke Federer in the very first game of the contest, but the 17-time Grand Slam winner soon found his rhythm and broke back to force the tie-break.

Federer showed more composure in the tie-break and was able to close it out 7-5 with some clinical hitting from the baseline.

The Wimbledon champion broke early in the second to race into a 3-1 lead and he was able to frustrate Murray before breaking again to go 5-2 ahead. He then had little difficulty in serving out the match 6-2 to set up an encounter with Djokovic.
