Andy Murray: 'It is a special day'

Andy Murray has admitted that he "never expected" to end the year as the number one tennis player in the world.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable second half of 2016, winning a second Wimbledon title, successfully defending his Olympic gold medal and dethroning Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings for the first time.

Murray ensured that he would finish the year as number one with a straight-sets victory over Djokovic in the final of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals this evening, and the Brit hailed it as a "special day".

"Obviously it's a very special day. Playing against Novak in a match like this, we've played grand slam finals, Olympics, it's been a tough rivalry," he told reporters.

"I've lost many of them, I'm very happy I managed to win today. To finish the year number one is something I never expected."

Murray, who had never before beaten Djokovic on an indoor hard court, has now won 24 matches in a row.
