Salford City Reds edge past Widnes Vikings

Salford City Reds have beaten Widnes Vikings in a closely-fought match at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Lee Gaskell and Jordan James helped Salford to a 12-6 lead at half time, with little between the two sides in the opening 40 minutes.

A strong spell from Joe Mellor got Widnes back on level terms, adding two tries to his first-half effort to complete his hat-trick.

Kevin Brown and Theo Fages both added a try to keep the scores tight heading into the final minutes of the game, but James added his second of the match just before full time to hand Salford the match.

The result leaves Salford 13th in the table, while Widnes sit 11th.
