Ian Watkins hails resilience of Salford Red Devils side

Ian Watkins admits that Salford Red Devils "made hard work" of seeing off Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, but praises his players for getting the job done.

Salford Red Devils stand-in coach Ian Watkins has said that he is hopeful his side can build on their victory over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The Red Devils kicked off their Middle 8s campaign with a 34-26 win at the AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Crucial late tries from Rangi Chase and Cory Paterson helped Salford over the line in an entertaining contest, with Watkins quick to praise his side's resilience.

"It was good to win but we were all pulling our hair out for the last 10 minutes," he is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News. "We lost our way a bit and this can happen. We found a way to come back though and win and can build on this.

"You would rather win ugly because every game counts. We made hard work of it but winning is so important. There is a lot of pressure in every game but the boys held on."

Salford return to action in seven days' time when they take on Leigh Centurions.
