Woods, McIlroy well off the pace

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have both struggled on day three at the US Open.

Playing together for the third day in a row, the world number one and number two saw their respective challenges at Merrion fade away, despite hitting a birdie each on the opening hole.

Woods finished with 76 to leave himself nine-over par for the tournament, while McIlroy went one better, rendering himself eight-over for the tournament after a 75 on day three.

They are both some way off the current lead, which is two-under par.
