Billionaire Carlos Slim, renowned in Formula 1 as Sergio Perez's primary financial backer, has expressed confidence that the sidelined Red Bull driver could make a return to the grid.
Speaking on the After Lap podcast, Slim, a member of Latin America's wealthiest family, commented on Perez's future, stating, "I think it depends a bit on him—what he wants to do and what options he has."
Perez, 35, is currently taking a forced break in 2025 to spend time with his young family, but the Telmex-supported Mexican has been heavily linked with the new Cadillac F1 team set to join the championship in 2026.
Slim highlighted Perez's credentials and mindset, saying, "I think a driver like Checo, who has achieved so much with a very complete career, will look for something that can excite him and that can be a challenge for him at the right time."
Perez's departure from Red Bull came at a reported cost of $20 million to terminate his contract, but Slim sees potential for a comeback.
Adding to the positive outlook, Mexico's place on the Formula 1 calendar appears secure. Clara Brugada, head of Mexico City's government, announced recently, "We'll be signing the agreement with F1" in the coming days, ensuring the Mexican Grand Prix's continuity.
Slim noted that Perez is making the most of his time away from racing. "He can also spend time on his professional affairs," the billionaire said, suggesting that Perez remains engaged with his career prospects.
When pressed again on the likelihood of Perez returning to Formula 1, Slim emphasised the importance of opportunities, stating, "I think it will depend on how enthusiastic he is about a project in the future. I think it will depend more on what concrete proposals there will be for him."
