Nico Rosberg quickest in first practice at British Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg edges out Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to come out on top in practice one ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Nico Rosberg has topped the standings in the first practice session ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix.

The German driver edged out Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton by 0.070s at Silverstone, while Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen held out impressively to finish third.

Rosberg spent much of the session sitting in the garage, but he recovered well to come out on top at Silverstone.

Shortly after seeing Hamilton spin out, the 30-year-old - who narrowly trails the Englishman in the overall standings - himself endured some troubles out on the track.

It was business as usual for Rosberg after a change of gearbox, however, and he was quick out of the blocks to get the better of Hamilton.

There was a 13th-place finish for Williams test driver Susie Wolff, meanwhile, with McLaren duo Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso finishing in 18th and 17th respectively.

The second practice session is scheduled to get underway at 2pm.
