Lewis Hamilton beats Nico Rosberg to pole at Silverstone

World championship leader Lewis Hamilton secures pole position at his home F1 race, the British Grand Prix.

World championship leader Lewis Hamilton has secured pole position at his home Formula 1 race, the British Grand Prix.

Hamilton recorded a time of 1:32.248 to finish 0.1s faster than Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg at Silverstone.

It is the 20th consecutive pole for Mercedes in F1 and Hamilton's eighth in nine races this season.

The Williams duo of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas are third and fourth on the grid, ahead of the Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel.

McLaren pair Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button have struggled all season long and only the two Marussias were slower than the two former world champions in Q1. Sauber's Felipe Nasr was the other man to exit at the first hurdle.

In Q2, Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen was the biggest casualty as he came home 13th after impressing in the first three practice sessions.
