Stoffel Vandoorne "optimistic" about F1 chances for 2016

Stoffel Vandoorne admits that he is hopeful of securing a drive in Formula 1 for 2016.

McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne has admitted that he is "optimistic" about his chances of securing a drive in Formula 1 in 2016.

Vandoorne secured the GP2 title after dominating the category for most of the season and is believed to have caught the eye of a number of Grand Prix teams.

However, despite an apparent lack of available seats in F1, the youngster is hopeful of earning a place in the sport for next year.

Vandoorne is quoted by UOL Grande Premio as saying: "Nothing has been decided yet, but I'm optimistic.

"I believe that there are chances with some teams. With the GP2 title guaranteed, I can now think about it in a relaxed way and without pressure.

"From the beginning of the season I knew that my goal for this season was to totally dominate the category in my second year. To be able to meet everybody's expectations is great."

McLaren recently announced that they would be retaining Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso in 2016.
