The future of Imola's Formula 1 race appears increasingly uncertain, as developments in Spain point to a potential shift in the sport's global calendar.

On Friday, Williams driver Carlos Sainz, a Madrid native, attended the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new 'Madring' circuit in the Spanish capital, set to host a Formula 1 race starting in 2026.

In his new role as an ambassador for the event, Sainz described the circuit's unique design, stating, "What I think we are achieving is the character of a hybrid circuit, with a street section with very close walls and a more open area, like a traditional European circuit."

The event was also attended by Manuel Avino, president of Spain's automobile federation, who made a bold declaration. "Fortunately, and God willing that all goes well, Spain—starting in 2026—will be the only country in the world except for the United States to host two Formula 1 races," he said.

Notably, Avino omitted Italy, which currently hosts grands prix at both Monza and Imola, from his vision. Imola's contract with Formula 1 is due to expire at the end of 2025, casting doubt on its continuation.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali addressed Imola's precarious position earlier in April, speaking to Rai radio. "It will be increasingly difficult to have two grands prix in the same country because the interest in our sport is growing," he said.

"It will be difficult for this current situation to continue for a long time."

Adding to the shifting landscape, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc attended the historic grand prix event at France's Paul Ricard circuit over the weekend, a venue absent from the F1 calendar since 2022.

Commenting on the enthusiastic crowd, Leclerc told local media, "It's incredible to see so many people, with so much passion for Formula 1. It proves how important a French GP could be once again," hinting at potential pressure for France to reclaim a race slot.
