Kevin Magnussen handed time penalty

McLaren's Kevin Magnussen is demoted to 12th place at the Belgian Grand Prix after the stewards rule that he forced Fernando Alonso of Ferrari off the track.

Kevin Magnussen has been demoted to 12th in the Belgian Grand Prix after being handed a 20-second time penalty for forcing Fernando Alonso off the track at Spa-Francorchamps this afternoon.

The McLaren rookie was battling with the Ferrari driver in the final laps of the race when the two-time world champion ran wide, allowing the Dane to hold on for sixth.

However, the stewards announced after reviewing the incident: "The driver of car 20 [Magnussen] was defending his position on the straight between turns four and five, and significant portion of car 14 [Alonso] was alongside car 20.

"The driver of car 20 did not leave enough space for car 14 and forced the car off the track."

The ruling drops the 21-year-old out of the points, promoting his teammate Jenson Button to sixth, while Force India's Nico Hulkenberg moves into the top 10.

The race was won by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.
