Premier League's Richard Scudamore: 'FA could have done more'

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore believes that the Football Association should have punished Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman following his reckless tackle on Newcastle United's Massadio Haidara.

The Magpies defender was left needing hospital treatment when the Latics player slammed his foot into just below the knee of Haidara during Wigan's 2-1 victory last weekend.

While the match officials failed to notice the challenge, the English governing body decided against taking retrospective action.

"You would have hoped that the match officials might have seen that," Scudamore old Sky Sports News. "We have to make sure we are doing all we can to ensure the match officials are able to see it and deal with it on the day.

"When it comes to retrospective action, whether there are currently hard and fast rules which say the FA couldn't look at that, I don't think there is anyone in football who would have criticised them had they decided on this occasion they could have done something."

Meanwhile, Haidara has spoken out about the incident, claiming that he feared his career could be over.
