Darren Fletcher hails "fantastic" Jonny Evans

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Darren Fletcher admits that the signing of Jonny Evans from Manchester United last month left him feeling "excited".

Darren Fletcher has claimed that Jonny Evans has already proved to be a "fantastic signing" for West Bromwich Albion.

The Northern Ireland international joined Fletcher in swapping Manchester United for the Baggies during the summer transfer window.

Evans has helped his new side to successive clean sheets since completing a £6m switch, which his Baggies teammate believes is a testament to his ability in the heart of defence.

"Jonny is a fantastic signing," Fletcher is quoted as saying by The Mirror. "I was so excited when he signed. He's a top player. A great leader and a good talker and I think it's a fantastic signing for the Albion and he's going to be a mainstay in that defence for a number of years.

"It's no coincidence that we have had two clean sheets and there's more to come as well. He's a great lad and I can't speak highly enough of him.

"I knew we were getting a top player - one of the best defenders I've ever played with at Manchester United and now here. I was constantly on the phone to him - probably doing his head in, I was phoning and texting him every day."

Evans spent 11 years at Old Trafford before departing at the end of last month.
