Werder Bremen narrowly edge out Bayer Leverkusen

Werder Bremen secure a tense 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in their Bundesliga clash at the Weserstadion.

Werder Bremen secured a tense 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in this afternoon's Bundesliga clash at the Weserstadion.

The hosts opened the scoring just after the quarter-hour mark when Davie Selke slammed the ball home following a Fin Bartels cross to feet.

In the 29th minute, Bremen doubled their lead through a free kick from Zlatko Junuzovic into the bottom left corner of the net.

However, the visitors halved the deficit at the end of the first half when Hakan Calhanoglu nodded home from very close range.

Leverkusen very nearly levelled proceedings shortly after the restart, but Stefan Kiessling struck the post from about six yards out.

The visitors laid siege to the Bremen goal for the remainder of the second half, but were not able to find an equaliser, leaving Bremen to secure all three points.

The result means that Bremen sit eighth in the Bundesliga table, while Leverkusen are in sixth place.
