USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann denies awkwardness with Landon Donovan after criticism

Jurgen Klinsmann tells reporters that he has no issue with Landon Donovan's criticism of his tactics during the World Cup.

USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has claimed that he does not have a problem with Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan.

The 32-year-old striker was overlooked for the World Cup this summer, and was critical of the German's tactics throughout the competition.

Klinsmann, however, did not have a bad word to say about the USA's all-time leading goalscorer as his side prepare to face the Czech Republic today.

"It's not awkward at all for me," Klinsmann told reporters. "I decided the players in his position, whether it is forward or midfielder or whatever, are just ahead of him.

"That he is upset about that decision and not going to the World Cup is, for me, a good reaction. It means he cares. That he's made some statements that he's not content, sees it differently, that's legitimate and that's totally fine with me.

"As a player, obviously he deserves every piece of recognition for an amazing career. [He's] done so much for the national team program. It's a pleasure to give him that farewell match and give him that recognition."

Donovan, who retires at the end of the season, has been called up for USA's friendly against Ecuador in Connecticut on October 10.
