David Sullivan: 'West Ham United could have signed Wilfried Bony'

West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan claims that he could have signed Wilfried Bony for £8m before Swansea paid £12m for the prolific Ivorian striker.

West Ham United co-chairman David Sullivan has revealed that the club could have signed Wilfried Bony for a cut-price offer two years ago, but instead opted to bring Andy Carroll to Upton Park.

The Ivory Coast international has proven to be one of the most prolific Premier League signings of recent times, having scored 17 goals throughout 2014 alone - more than any other player in the division.

Bony made the move to Swansea City from Dutch side Vitesse, for a fee of £12m, in the summer of 2013, but Sullivan insists that the Hammers could have landed him for an even cheaper sum.

"I would have bought Wilfried Bony - £8million and 40 grand a week," he told The Telegraph. "Swansea paid £12m. I had him bought for £8m."

Real Madrid and Manchester City are among those reportedly interested in signing Bony this January.
